Is anyone aware of a method of ensuring all new virtual machines are added to a specific Virtual Machine DRS group? We have a VM that for political reasons ideally needs to be run on its own host, but still requires the ability to HA or DRS off to another host in times when absolutely necessary. If it didn't have the DRS or HA requirements we would remove the Host from the cluster and keep it separate. The setup would involve 4 DRS groups, 2 for hosts and 2 for VMs:
- Host Group 1 - Special Production Host
- Host Group 2 - All Other Production Hosts
- VM Group 1 - Special Production VM
- VM Group 2 - All Other Production VMs
The 2 rules would be
- All VMs in VMGroup 1 should run on Host Group 1
- All VMs in VMGroup 2 should run on Host Group 2
It is 'VM Group 2' that would be the default group for any newly created VM's.
I am still trying to convince management that the best route is to let DRS do its job and if you want to guarantee resources a simple resource pool setup is the best bet. Nonetheless, so I have all the answers ready I still need to see if there is a way to add all newly created VMs to 'VM group 2'.
