Update: I tried reinstalling VMware Workstation and am now getting this error which seems very relevant:

I have VMware Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769 installed on my host machine running Windows 7 Home Premium.
My guest virtual machine is running Ubuntu 12.10.
When I try to update vmware tools, I do the following:
1. Boot my Ubuntu VM
2. In VMware Workstation, I go to VM > Install VMware Tools
3. Download and Install
I'm then faced with this error:

I've tried reinstalling VMware Workstation and I still get the error. I've been at this for about 5 hours now and am getting really frustrated considering I have a project due Friday and need VMware Tools.
Is there any way I can install VMware Tools from within my Ubuntu Machine without relying on VMware Workstation to download and mount the ISO so that it appears in my VM?
Every single forum post I've come across completely ignores the fact that I can't even get to that part where I have the installer in my VM machine.
