vCenter Appliance 5.1 Active Directory not functioning

This is brand new VCA not an upgrade. I've not added any VM's to it yet. I cannot log in to the VC with my Windows credentials from the vSphere client. I get an error "A general system error occurred: Authorize Exception"

I looked at this entry:

http://communities.vmware.com/message/2121416#2121416

And this KB entry:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2033742

  • I have added AD via  the appliance's web interface and that worked and shows up.
  • I have named the VCA and used a FQDN, it is in DNS and responds by ping and also a reverse lookup
  • I can login via the vSphere webclient just fine with the root account
  • The ESXi host is running NTP (from the DC) and everybody is reading the correct time - host and VCA
  • I have tried removing the VCA from the domain, readding and rebooting - no go.
  • I have tried removing the VCA from the domain and adding via the CLI and it works, the status looks "good" but no go
  • in the vSphere client, Permissions Tab, Add, Add -- there is nothing in the DOMAIN pulldown except (server) and SYSTEM-DOMAIN

Nothing seems to work.

One really strange thing -- in the webclient, I've repeatedly entered the FQDN of the VCA but everytime you reboot it goes back to just the hostname. In the /etc/hosts file it shows the FQDN.

Can someone help me figure this out?
