Hello community!

I'm thrilled to present to you the very first public beta release of Coopto - a vRO Plugin for integrateing Docker into your VMware stack!

You'll get all details on the projects home page at GitHub.Purpose of this project is to create a community process of plug-in development for vRealize Orchestrator (vRO) by fully integrating Docker into the VMware stack. So, please feel free to work with us on this.

Please note that this is a very first public beta and we do need your help to get any bugs fixed that might slipped trough our quality management.

About

Coopto is a plug-in for VMware’s orchestration engine vRealize Orchestrator. It aims to provide full Docker functionality within the central automation component of the VMware stack in order to utilize and combine the power of container technology with virtualization technology.

We think that containers and VM may not only coexist but greatly benefit from each other. Parts where virtualization alone so far has greatly failed due to the high variation of competing formats in a very dynamic market can be moved to the shiny parts or container technology, e.g. the independent and therefore shiftable format. Other aspects of cluster computation where virtualization has matured and proven enterprise ready within the last years can furthermore be implemented on the trusted and well known virtualization stack currently in use in most modern datacenter.

Digging in deeper the combination of both can result in an even more powerful computation stack then possible with just one of the technologies. A typical real world use-case would be providing a persistent storage to a container by leveraging existing vSphere storage APIs to create and attach a virtual HDD exclusively for that container, implicitly simplifying container management and backup for business critical data.

In order to bring both worlds together we use a simple to use and yet very common orchestration engine: vRealize Orchestrator. In fact: if you’re running on a vSphere stack, you probably already own vRealize Orchestrator.

From our point of view both technologies, virtualization and containerization, currently have their advantages and disadvantages and therefore a right to exist. Time will show how both develop and eventually one will be the winner or both will merge into a new, even more powerful technology. However this will turn out, within the here and now we want to combine the best of the two technologies. That’s where Coopto comes in – and due to its open source nature you can be a part of it, if you wish to.

USB 3.0 on ESXi disappointing speeds

Greetings,

I've been doing some speed testing with a USB 3.0 external HDD using LAN Speed Test Lite.  You can point to local HDD when using LAN Speed Test to check local speeds and not go over the network.

When I plug this drive into a Win10 PC

Write = 604 Mbps

Read = 1,416 Mbps

However when I do the same test with this drive on our ESXi 6.0.0 3620759 HP ProLiant DL380 G7

Write = 412 Mbps

Read = 763 Mbps

What I'm doing on the VM side is I added the USB xHCI controller to a VM that is on this ESXi host.  I then added the USB Device to the VM.

I've tried updating to the VM Hardware version (11) and did not notice much of a change.  Is there anything else I can do to try to push the speeds up a little closer to what I'm seeing on a local PC?

Thanks

/state.tgz or whole volume corrupted at each power failures

Hello

I've a setup using vSphere Essential Plus Kit and three last gen Mac Pro installed with ESXi 6.0.0U2. We're working on this fresh for a week now and everything is quite good except that we lose the system at each power failure…

We got two power failures in the day, at the first one we lost one ESXi and have to reinstall it from scratch, and at the second we lost all three.

Each time with errors when loading /state.tgz:

Fatal error 33 (Inconsistent data)

or

Fatal error 11 (Volume corrupted)

I've another setup based on Mac Mini with ESXi 5.5 and I've never seen such a weakness with power failure…

The only differences I see are:

— ESXi version

— SSD based system storage

— using internal SSD for caching

All VM are (hopefully) stored on a NAS so I haven't lost anything really valuable for now…

Any idea why my setup is so weak?

Cheers,

Yoann

VMWare player problem with snapshot. Image created as a snapshot using workstation, can't expand disk.

I have VMWare Player 12.1.1.  I have a system image with a 20GB disk.  It was created by someone with Workstation.  I receive the following error when trying to expand the disk:

ExpandError.png

This system is a snapshot image.  I don't have the ability to manage snapshot images in player.  The list of files in the directory is as follows:

ExpandErrorFileList.png

There is nothing in the vmsd file, the vmsd.bak file has:

ExpandErrorvmsdbak.png

I need to expand the disk image to 40GB.  I don't care about any snapshots.  I would like to reset the system to forget about the original disk if possible, merge the original with the snapshot if possible.  The current version of the image is good to go forward with.

Thanks for any help,

Glen

Slow processing of small files over SAN

$

Hi,

I have a UCS cluster running 5.5 accessing storage on an EMC VNX. When copying large files, speed is fine. When processing small files, we're getting extremely slow processing speeds.

We've moved files around to other LUNs, moved machines between hosts and all the same.

The same workloads operate fine on physical machines with local storage.

Any thoughts as to where to look for troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

I couldn't find any question like this on the internet, so I asked it here

SRM 6.1 Recovery for Stretched storage executes Prepare storage step twice

$

Hi

This query is regarding SRM 6.1 recovery workflow (failover) for stretched storage using SRA. (Policy based replication using Storage array adapter)

Failover Workflow report of SRM indicates issuing of SRM command preparefailover twice to SRA running at Protected site

one after the step "Suspend non-critical VMs at recovery site for live migration"

     4. Prepare stretched storage for VM migration at protected site

4.1.2. Prepare stretched storage consistency groups for VM migration at protected site

another one after step "Unregister VMs at protected site"

14. Prepare storage for migration at protected site

14.1.2. Prepare storage consistency groups at protected site for migration

What is the difference and workings between step 4.1.2  and Step 14.1.2

Again in unplanned Failover, Step 4 will be skipped, but Step 14 will be executed. Please explain

Thanks

Chandra

How can I fix no element found: line 1, column 0 error when trying to Save the Configuration for vSphere Replication Appliance

$

As in the title, when saving the Configuration settings from the web interface (on port 5480) I get a red error message that says

"no element found: line 1, column 0"

This appears in red at the top of the config settings. The same error appears when trying to click the button near the bottom that says "Start" the VRM Service.

I couldn't find any other posts talking about this error. It seems to me like it's something in the web interface, so is there any way to do the following from the command line:

1. Change the Configuration Settings

2. Start the VRM Service

If there is a way I can fix the original error message and just use the web interface then that would be much preferred.

Hope somebody here can give me a hand as not getting anywhere with resolving the "no element found" error.

Thanks in advance.

How does vR choose which network adapter to send the traffic on?

I thought my vSphere replication traffic was throttled, because on our dV switch we have it set to 4 Mbps, so across 6 hosts at most 24 Mbps worth of traffic should be traversing our WAN link.  However that doesn't seem to be the case when verifying the current data rate using Netflow and whats up gold.

Upon further investigation, when I look at the switchport graphs in our cacti system, it seems that the steady flow of traffic is coming from each ESXi 5.0 server's management network interface, which would be vmnic0 for each vm on standard switch vSwitch0.  This network is just the management network where we are able to link them all to vcenter, or ssh to them or use vSphere client individually if there's a problem with vCenter, etc..  There is just one virtual machine network on this and its called "Virtual Center Network" where our vCenter virtual machine resides on.

The DV switch has all of our other Vm networks on, like LAN, Voice, DMZ1, DMZ2, etc... and our vSphere Replication Management Server (VRMS) and vSphere Replication Server have only ONE nic, and its tied to this dv-ServerNetwork, which is on this dv switch with the 4 Mbps throddling and 25% low shares assignted to vSphere Replication.

So if all the VM's being replicated, and the VRMS and VR servers are all on this dv switch... why would the traffic be exiting vmnic0 (Management Network) ?  It should be existing the dV switch uplinks which are vmnic5 and vmnic7 (trunk to Cisco switch stack).

How would one force the traffic out this interface without any ill affects or downtime?

Again this is a ESXi 5.0 update 3 environment with SRM 5.0.3 and the earliest version of vSphere replication when you needed two VM's at each side.

Dell poweredge compatibility

Dear All,

I have a hardware dell power edge for esxi 6.0 upgrade as given below.

ModelProcessorType
PowerEdge R710Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
PowerEdge R320Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1410 0 @ 2.80GHz

I could see the in the compatibility matrix in VMware Compatibility Guide - System Search, however unable to find the matching processor type in the list.

Does that mean these processors are not compatible thought the hardware model is compatible?

Please suggest.

Request Catalog Item with Provisioning request Not working after upgrade

$

I had used the workflow "Request a Catalog Item with Provisioning Request" workflow to create a workflow to be executed through a REST call with with vRealize 7 and vRO 7.  Everything was working before, I could request on behalf of a user in different Business Groups and it would use the right entitlement for the user that was inserted in the on behalf of.  Of course it would show as being submitted by the service account I used to connect vRO with vRA through the plugin.  Now after upgrading to 7.0.1 for all components this workflow is not working properly anymore.  If the service account I was using is entitled to Blueprints in more then 1 business group at a time then it fails.  Troubleshooting narrowed it down to that the service account would have to have permissions in the BG that user you are requesting on behalf of is part of but no others.  This is not how it should be. Any ideas?

Report vmdks with -00000s

Hey all,

I am not sure if what I am looking for is possible or not as I am not the best at scripting but I am needing a script that will search through and find any .vmdk files with a -000000*.vmdk format.  You know that snapshots can creep around and not show up in the snapshot manager and just create vmdk files with that format and this would be great to help out with those rogue snaps.

If any one has another way to do this I am all ears.

Whn I try to Deploy an ovf file on Vsphere client for Esxi5.5, I get the error message:

"failed to deploy ovf package: invalid configuration for device '7'"

What does it mean? I have not found any information about it.

I could deploy other .ovf files, but there is one that when deploying I get this error message and nothing is done.

I have created the ovf for three times, butit is always the same.

The OVF file is created using Vmware converter 5.5.3 with Vm ware workstation 10.

Does any body know something aout this error message?

Thansk very much in advance,

iSCSI port binding - two iscsi subnets on one vswitch

$

Hello,

Is below scenario supported regarding iSCSI software port binding (ESXi 6.x)?

Two iSCSI storage devices (2 controllers each) in two different subnets: 192.168.10.x and 192.168.20.x (mask 255.255.255.0).

Host ESXi with one iSCSI vSwitch.

Four vmkernel portgroups: two in 192.168.10.x subnet and two in 192.168.20.x subnet.

There is an ISCSI software port binding configured for each vmkernel port.

Please note, that this scenario is little bit different from examples on VMware KB: Considerations for using software iSCSI port binding in ESX/ESXi
