Failed - A specified parameter was not correct: unitNumber

I have just inherited a vSphere ESXi 6 system and am running into the following problem:

Whenever I try to change any host settings on any of my hosts I receive the following error:

Failed - A specified parameter was not correct: unitNumber

I can't find much info about an incorrect unitNumber anywhere on the web, so I'm hoping that I can find help here! Thanks!

vSphere ESXi 6.7 - PSOD with Distributed Switch upgrade to v6.6

$

All,

I just upgraded one of my environments from vSphere 6.5 to vSphere 6.7 and I'm experiencing a PSOD right after engaging an upgrade over the assigned dvSwitch to the latest version. So far I'm getting the following PSOD output and I'm more than confident it's not related to a faulty hardware:

I have a single cluster with 3 hosts included in my environment. The first time I noticed the above PSOD was right after I engaged the dvSwitch upgrade via vCenter which resulted with all 3 hosts getting PSOD, rendering the whole cluster completely down. After I rebooted all 3 hosts, they seemed to have been stabilized, however I decided to reboot the third host in order to check few side things related to the new "quick boot" feature and since then the host is getting a constant PSOD almost immediately after making connection with the vCenter instance. When I checked the status of the dvSwitch I noticed that it is complaining about this very same host not yet being upgraded on the dvSwitch side, so I assume something is still not quite OK with the latest vSphere 6.7 binaries.

It seems that I'll have to disconnect the host physically from the network in order to be able to get it back online and probably remove manually the dvSwitch assignment from its configuration, but in any case I'm making this post as a heads up to anyone who might be willing to make a similar upgrade. So for the moment be extremely careful with the dvSwitch upgrades.

So far I didn't see any indications in the release notes nor anywhere on the web about similar behavior situation. Perhaps VMware should include this problem in the following KB article just in case:

Autodeploy vcsa 6.5 trouble

Hello,

I am trying to configure the Auto Deploy service in our instance of VCSA 6.5 but it does not work at all.
I'm using a Dell server (R630), PXE booting is done successfully, as well as loading the iPXE undionly.kpxe.vmw-hardwired image from our TFTP server.

Looking at the rbd-cgi.log file on the VCSA, I see messages like this:

Hi,

Since the Interopability Matrix is not updated yet, do you know if vCD 9.1 supports vSphere 6.7, and if not, is there any time frame on when it will be supported?

Hi,

I have a problem to connect vCD9 HTTPS REST API base URL with Veeam B&R 9.5 as a vCloud backup,

cell working directly,

throught tool "Postman" returns POST/GET call without any error (Status is 200 OK)

but "HTTPS REST API base URL"  example -> https://<vcd-public-FQDN>/API

or https://<vcd-public-FQDN>/API/Versions, ... API is not reasonable ?

returns blank page with error (Status 404 Not Found)

is this networking problems ?

or how to I check if in vCD9 REST API is working correct on vCD9

BTW

on vCD 5.5 all working perfect - network settings on all vDC is identical

Upgrade & Migrate from External PSC to Embedded

$

Scan reading through the vCenter 6.7 release notes - a key thing that caught my eye was that we no longer have to worry about complex external PSC and load balancer configurations to get linked mode - Hooray!

I have two questions about it if anyone knows….

1. To move from a vSphere 6.0 multi-site, 2 x PSC’s in an HA config with custom certs + 1 vCenter per site config, to the single embedded vCenter 6.7 per site model, am I right in thinking that we’d have to complete a full upgrade to 6.7 first, and then deploy a new embedded appliance, and backup and restore vcenter into the new embedded appliance?

Seems pretty brutal, but I really do despise the whole PSC / HA / HLB setup, would be glad to get away from it.

2. Aside from SSO performance, what would be the downsides of moving from an external to an embedded model with 6.7?

Thanks

I want to try and build a re-usable PoweShell script to create a vCD ORG, VDC, vAPP, Edge GW and program the edge GW NAT and FW rules. I would like to use the API since it seems like the way things are moving versus powercli. Does anyone have an example similar to the blog below? I know the blog is writing with powercli in mind. I am looking for some example with PowerShell using the Invoke-RestMethod and VDC API.

Starting a Disabled Service

$

We had attempted to create a logon task that called on a .bat file to start a disabled service. The contents of the .bat are:

sc config EmOpti.Service start= demand

net start EmOpti.Service

It seems though that regular users, who have just user access locally, are getting denied. Apparently starting a service requires elevated rights.

Is there a better way to go about this? I was thinking of using the "Privilege Elevation" piece of UEM (9.2.1), since that's what it sounds like it's designed for, but, haven't touched it yet. I'd really rather not leave this service enabled by default on our parent image.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

We recently downloaded and installed PowerCLI 6.5 and 10 (the most recent) and have been trying to test the Horizon View API.  However, when trying the Connect-HVserver cmdlet we get the error below.  We are sure that the username/password/domain is correct since we are able to login to the HV admin panel without a problem  (also, if we force a wrong password to the command we get a 'wrong password' error).  Any suggestions are welcome!

PowerCLI script for vSphere capacity planning

Hello everyone!

After recent discussion on vSphere Capacity planning, I thought I would share one of the tools I use for this purpose. This is a side project I've been working on for few months.

I present to you, my very own "VMware Capacity & Performance Report PowerCLI script (v2.1 Community edition)"

http://1drv.ms/1J00vkq

(Click here then click on "Download")

This is a complex PowerCLI script I wrote, that generates an e-mail report that gives you insight into the current state of your VMware vSphere environment's capacity. It generates tables, pie charts and line charts with information about CPU, Memory & Storage capacity, VM Provisioning Potential, Cluster Resilience and more. Check the script's #INFORMATION block for more information about prerequisites, script input and output.

Have a look at the report it generates and let me know what you think of it!

Please share your thoughts and comments!

VCSA 6.7 - Can't login with AD after upgrade!

I just upgraded with success my VCSA from 6.5 to 6.7 by deploying a new VM, however I can no longer login with AD credentials.

I have set my domain as my default identity source in SSO, however when watching the log file in /var/log/vmware/vpxd/websso.log I keep seeing it try and send the authentication to vsphere.local and not to the domain I have setup.

Does anyone have a similar issue or know how I can fix this?

Thanks!

Diagnose autostart timing problem

Hi,

Am trying to configure auto start to correctly start my VMs with a delay between the first and second VM, as the first VM has loopback storage for the second (second VM is unavailable until first VM has fully started).

Here is how I have autostart configured:

Autostart settings.PNG

As you can see, there is a 10 minute start delay for testing.

However, when looking at the UI during the startup process, there is only a 30 second gap between VM 1 and 2, as below:

Attempted power on.PNG

Why is it ignoring my start delay, and seemingly using the defaults?

How can I correct this?

Thanks

Certificate validation with Connect-VIServer (PowerCLI 10.0 & 6.5.4.7155375)

I'm trying to resolve a certificate validation issue I'm seeing in PowerCLI.

(I know I can just set -InvalidCertificateAction to Ignore or save the thumbprint as an exception in PSTCS as a workaround.)

When I have InvalidCertificateAction set to Prompt, I get:

> Connect-VIServer myviserver.blah.net -Verbose
WARNING: There were one or more problems with the server certificate for the server myviserver.blah.net:443:

* The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value.
Certificate: [Subject]    CN=myviserver.blah.net
[Issuer]    CN=myCA DN

I'm not sure what it doesn't like about the CN... it matches and browsers don't complain. I tried messing with [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol based on some other threads but that didn't seem to help.

Does anyone have ideas on how to investigate further?

Thanks!

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone tried getting Box Drive to work on an appstack or writable for a non admin user without it asking for admin permissions to move or save files? I have a non admin account with appstack and I can successfully install Box Drive (Latest) but when i go to save or create a new file, I "get Destination Folder Access Denied". If I install it on a non-persistent without appstack or writable it works like it should. I'm currently on the latest version of View, AppVol, and UEM. I'm also using Windows 10 1607 Enterprise. Thanks!

Horizon and NAT

Hi,

Trying to understand what mix of VMware technology I need to use to allow lab users to access their environments with Horizon View.  Within our lab, we have 6 different groups of RHEL 7 VMs that must replicate a real world environment as closely as possible.  Therefore each "group" of VMs is contained in its own Port Group and the port group does not have accessibility to any other networks... essentially the VMs are isolated and each port group uses the same range of RFC 1918 addresses (this is required.)  To gain access to the VMs via SSH, each port group has a dedicated NAT device with two NICs, one on the internal range and one on the external side.  We use 1:1 NAT mappings for each VM in the Port Group.

SSH and other communication works fine in this scenario.  However, the task I have is to provide Horizon View access to the RHEL VM's in each "group."  The catch is that I need a single point of access, so a single Horizon Connection server for all groups of VMs... not 1 connection server for each group of VMs.  So essentiall I have NAT between the Connection server and the RHEL Agent.  The agent checks-in and communicates with the Connection server fine.

The problem is when we launch a desktop pool.  the connection fails because the Agent is asking the client to use the RFC 1918 address instead of the external address (or at least, the FQDN of the VM.)  I know in older Citrix days, there were settings to allow for "AltAddr" where the agents is instructed to send the client a different IP than its actual IP.  I also see this is possible with VMware Horizon Direct-Connection Plugin, where an alternate IP can be specified, however Direct-Connection plugin does not support Linux.

Aside from creating 6 different Connection servers and asking my users to rely on 6 different URLs for each "group", any options to keep a single Connection server (or UAG for that matter.)

Thanks!

JTK
