2V0-642 relevance

$

Greetings all,

I am considering whether to complete the 2V0-642 exam for my VCP-NV. This exam is now for a version of NSX-V which:

  • is no longer under mainstream support
  • is definitely not supported on the last two major vSphere releases.
  • is now two major releases behind the current version of NSX-V.

I had hoped to complete my VCP-NV in the next six months to maintain certification, and had hoped to use a different track to do so; however, I'm not sure whether certifying on a nearly out-of-date product is the best idea.

Does anyone know if there's movement in the works to update 2V0-642?

Fusion 11 on Mojave (host) VMware Tools keeps crashing

I upgraded to macOS Mojave on then 25:th of September and run Fusion 10 without any problem, then I upgraded to Fusion 11 and all of a sudden VMware Tools Core Service constantly keeps crashing (Windows 7 as guest OS).

I have tried to uninstall VMware Tools and reinstall it but it still crash. Really annoying, I shouldn’t have upgraded to Fusion 11

RSS issues at Windows 2012 R2 with VMXNET3 and 10.2.0 VM Tools - still not resolved?

$

Hi,

I try to enable RSS on Windows 2012 R2 servers running VMXNET3.

The case is that I have 5 servers where I want to enable RSS on. All vm's are more or less the same spec. (+-vCPU, Memory). All of them have >=4 logical CPU.

I of course had issues with the very old vm drivers/tools running so I failed at the first attempt. After upgrading VM tools to 10.1.7 I managed to enable RSS on the first server. Success!

...but I failed on the next ones and can't force them to be capable of RSS. I went thru all the steps enabling TCP global settings + enabling on the NIC Advanced setting.

Finally I've installed the latest VM Tools 10.2.0 but it still did not help. In fact I managed to effectively enable it at one more server but as part of the troubleshooting I lost it.

What I did was: netsh int tcp set global RSS=Disable at the stage when it worked (state as above), but the netsh int tcp set global RSS=Enable didn't bring it back as I expected.

Currently all the servers are running 10.2.0 Tools with VMXNET driver 1.7.3.7 but only one has RSS Capable = True and IndirectionTable filled in when I run the PowerShell cmdlets.

Any advices on what should be checked more? Should VM tools 10.2.0 solve all the issues with VMXNET3 and RSS on Server 2012 R2?

esxcli --proxy not working in 6.5.0

$

I manage ESXi 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 7967591) under free license.

I would like to upgrade it to 6.7 (because better macOS client support). There is no .zip file patch yet.

Hypervisor is in restricted network where all HTTP comunication must go through proxy 10.1.2.3:3128.

First I disable firewall to be able to connect to port 3128. I verify this by running nc -vz 10.1.2.3 3128.

When I run either of these commands:

esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=http://10.1.2.3:3128
esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=https://10.1.2.3:3128
esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=10.1.2.3:3128

I get:

 [MetadataDownloadError]
Could not download from depot at https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml, skipping (('https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml', '', 'file not found'))        url = https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml
Please refer to the log file for more details.

I am able to use http_proxy enviroment varible to use `wget` to download files from the internet.

Is there something wrong with my command or is --proxy switch broken in 6.5.0?

NLB in transparent mode

I'm doing some NLB tests and I've discovered that It's possible to use the tranparent mode (putting the flag in the EDIT POOL GUI), with both the toplogies; in-line and harmed.

So, why I always read in the docs that the transparent feature requires an  in-line topology.

Server 2016 VMware tools (vmstatsprovider.dll) issue

$

We have an issue on all Server 2016 VMs; vmstatsprovider.dll is crashing as shown in WER logs and application log.

Other OS do not exhibit this issue.

We updated to tools 10.1.10 from 10.1.7 (10.1.10 indicates a fix for this issue) to no avail - still causing an issue.

We also tried a full uninstall of 10.1.7, restart and install of 10.1.10 on one Server.

Oddly both in event log and WER logs vmstatsprovider.dll looks to still be registered as 10.1.7 despite the file version being 10.1.10 on the machine - this is the same on all we have tried to update.

Does anyone know a way to monitor the "real" memory used by a VM with VGPU and "Reserve All Memory" enabled, with using vcenter 6.5 ?

$

Environment: vcenter 6.5, horizon 7.4, full vm with nvidia vgpu (all memory reserved)

Hello,

it seems that now with vCenter 6.5, the feature to monitor the memory used by a VM with a VGPU (nvidia m60-2q, for example) and with all memory reserved, does not exist anymore and it is always showing a 100% memory used.

This behavior did not occur in the past with vcenter 6.0, when we were able to monitor in the vcenter the real memory used by the vm with vgpu eventhough all the memory was reserved.

vmware support says that this is an expected behavior, and that this feature does not exist anymore in 6.5.

As it was very useful to monitor the real memory of vms from the vcenter, does anyone know an alternate way to have access to the real memory usage as we cannot do it anymore from the monitor/performance tab in the vcenter client?

Thanks

Best Regards,

Oriol

Hello,

Anyone know if macOS Mojave guests are supposed to function on Fusion 11?

If so, how do I make the guest understand that I'm running with the display capabilities of a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)?

Thanks,

Host fails to boot after ESXi install

Hi,

I had a server fail that was running ESXi 5.5 and I needed to reinstall ESXi. I took the opportunity to install a fresh copy of 6.7 to an attached USB stick like before but when the server reboots after install it can't see the USB stick, has anyone got any ideas because I'm well and truly stuck? What I can't get my head around is the fact of, it was all working fine before the the original image of 5.5 became corrupt and needed to be reinstalled, same USB stick, same server, same BIOS settings, same USB port.

Some info that I'm hoping will help:

The server is an HP Proliant ml350p gen8

The BIOS boot order settings are correct, even if I force to the USB stick is still doesn't boot.

I tried reverting back to ESXi 5.5 but still have the same problem.

Tried a different USB stick.

I've used an image from a DVD as well as rufus.exe

If I plug the stick into another server it into ESXi fine

I've spent plenty of hours on google, but still no joy

Piping multiple Get commands with multiple selects to obtain snapshot and folder information

$

All,

I'm having an issue getting the following 2 commands combined, any ideas/solutions would be highly appreciated

Goal: To output a list of all snapshots of VMs from a specific vCenter folder that includes

  • VM Name
  • Folder/subfolder names
  • Snapshot Size
  • Date Created
  • Snapshot Name
  • Snapshot Description

#1:

Get-Folder "Production" | Get-VM | Get-Snapshot | select VM, Folder, SizeGB, Created, Name, Description

  • This successfully outputs the VMs name, snap size, snap name, and snap description. However the Folder value is blank.

#2:

Get-VM "VMName" | select Folder

  • This successfully outputs the folder name

So how can I output the folder name while also outputting the snapshot information at the same time?

Thank you in advance,

Tim

Horizon View 7.4 "USB Redirection is not available for this desktop"

Hey,

We've in the process of upgrading to Horizon View 7.4 but are having intermittent issues with USB Redirection not pulling through.

The error in the Horizon client just says "USB Redirection is not available for this desktop". Weirdly half the time it works and half of the time it does not, even from the same underlying client.
Impacts multiple users from multiple desktops.

Horizon client 4.7.0

Windows 7 underlying and VDI

GPO set to Automatically Connect on Startup and When Inserted

Never happens on older version of Horizon View (6.x), which is still our production environment. Not sure if relevant but another oddity we see is that if a USB device is plugged in during start up, and redirection is working, the USB device installs itself on every login even when drivers are available. This is another thing that never used to happen on older version of Horizon.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Pete

Openshift create project Container

Hello Guys

In a implementation of VRA 7.4, I need to be able to do the following:

In Openshift I need to be able to create a container through cli from VRA. Windows 2012 was installed with Openshift Client Tools and run the cli for create a new container

oc new-app mysql-ephimeral

The Container is created without problems but I need to know if it is possible to do this from VRA.

I think it's possible to do with XAAS making a call via powershell entering host parameters user password and openshift command.

I would like to know if it is possible to do the aforementioned or if you know any other method that allows me to do the above.

Thanks for ypur help.

vSphere 6.5, NSX 6.4.0->6.4.3 = PROBLEM!

$

Hello everybody!

- vSphere VCSA 6.5.0.20000 Build 9451637

- VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 8935087

- vSAN 6.6

- NSX 6.4.3 Build 9927516

Immediately after upgrading from NSX 6.4.0 to 6.4.3, problems arose: at random, different virtual machines stopped responding (hang). It is impossible to connect to them via RDP or through the console. Then after a while they again work in normal mode, then hang again.

Shutting down the NSX-manager and Guest Introspection immediately solves the problem.

Any ideas?
