User Account for Composer failing credential validation – lots of audit failures

$
0
0

1) In the Security log on our vCenter server we see an Event 4776 Audit Failure entry for the service account used for Composer, which is then followed by a successful logon for the service account. This is occurring every few seconds to every few minutes.

2) Additionally, in Horizon Administrator on both connection servers, we get the following warning once or twice a day:

vCenter at address https://VCENTER.XXXX.YYYY.EDU:443/sdk has invalid credentials

Everything in Horizon seems to be working fine, so I'm not sure if I need to be concerned with these or not.

- I’ve re-entered the credentials for the composer service account in the Horizon console (via View Configuration – Servers - vCenter Servers) on both connection servers. I can log into vSphere using that service account successfully.  Rebooted vCenter server so all VMware services were restarted. The service account has Administrator role in vSphere and local admin rights on the server.

Environment:

- Horizon 7.3.2 - Two connection servers, one for internal use, one for external user paired with a security server.

- vSphere 6.5

ESXi 6.5 Host not responding in vCenter after reboot - Unsupported version URI "urn:vpxa3/6.0"

$

0

There are three hosts that all did this.  After rebooting the cluster all hosts say Not Responding in vCenter.  The hosts are online and all the VMs are running.  I can log into the hosts directly and everything is ok.

Details:

ESXi 6.5.0 Build 7388607

Windows vCenter Server 6.7  8833120

In the vpxa log of the hosts and the vpxd log of the vcenter I see things like this:

Got vmacore exception: class Vmacore::NotSupportedVersionException(Unsupported version URI "urn:vpxa3/6.0"

I manually clicked on one of the hosts and chose connect and the host reconnected just fine.  The messages (like above) for that particular host stopped.

Can anyone tell me what the 6.0 means in urn:vpxa3/6.0 ? Its like the Host and vCenter are having a disagreement until I reconnect (or possibly restart agent or reboot host)

Thanks for any help.  Going nuts on this one.

ESXI 6.0.0: No communication between network adapters in the same VM port group on different ESXi hosts

I have a weird issue and I couldn't figure it out:

Here's the configuration:

  • hosts ESX001 and ESX002 - both running version 6.0.0
  • no distributed switch
  • there are 2 virtual network switches with identical config on both hosts :

  - vSwitch0:

     > VMkernel port "Management Network"

     > VMkernel port "vMotion"
  - vSwitch1:

     > Virtual Machine Port Group "Servers" - the option "Notify Switches" is set to "Yes"

     > Virtual Machine Port Group "Cluster" - the option "Notify Switches" is set to "No"

  • there are 2 VMs on hosts ESX001:

  - WEB001 - Network Adapter 1 connected to "Servers" and Network Adapter 2 connected to "Cluster"

  - CRM003 - Network Adapter 1 connected to "Servers" and Network Adapter 2 connected to "Cluster"

  • there are 2 VMs on hosts ESX002:

  - WEB002 - Network Adapter 1 connected to "Servers" and Network Adapter 2 connected to "Cluster"

  - CRM004 - Network Adapter 1 connected to "Servers" and Network Adapter 2 connected to "Cluster"

  • all network adapters connected to the "Servers" VM port group are in the same VLAN/subnet
  • all network adapters connected to the "Cluster" VM port group are in the same VLAN/subnet
  • each VM can ping any of the other VMs from its "Servers" interface to their "Servers" interface.

Here's the problem (visualized in the attached picture):

  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of WEB001 to "Cluster" interface of WEB002
  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of WEB001 to "Cluster" interface of CRM003
  • ping fails from "Cluster" interface of WEB001 to "Cluster" interface of CRM004

  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of WEB002 to "Cluster" interface of WEB001
  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of WEB002 to "Cluster" interface of CRM004
  • ping fails from "Cluster" interface of WEB002 to "Cluster" interface of CRM003

  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of CRM003 to "Cluster" interface of CRM004
  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of CRM003 to "Cluster" interface of WEB001
  • ping fails from "Cluster" interface of CRM003 to "Cluster" interface of WEB002

  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of CRM004 to "Cluster" interface of CRM003
  • ping works from "Cluster" interface of CRM004 to "Cluster" interface of WEB002
  • ping fails from "Cluster" interface of CRM004 to "Cluster" interface of WEB001

I wonder if anybody else had experienced this kind of problem.

I already checked some VMWarearticles but they do not describe this exact issue.

I would appreciate your ideas on what causes this and how to fix it.

Connection Server logins ignoring AD Sites

$

We are seeing issues where users are unable to login to the connection server and receive a "unknown username or bad password" error. They can try again using the same credentials and eventually can login (We verified by copy/paste credentials). We've identified by looking at packet captures/firewall logs that during a user login the connection server is intermittently trying to communicate with domain controllers not in the servers AD site which is not allowed by the firewall (We have 100+ domain controllers and the Connection Servers can only talk to the 6 in their site). We've verified that the server knows which AD site it's in and can communicate with DC in those site. The issue is when the connection server attempts to perform user logins using DC not in the servers site. Our environment consists of 4 x Connection Servers in a POD running 7.4.0.

Hi there,

I’m having an issue setting SIOC on a particular datastore. There are similar datastores set the same way but this one has the following error:

System.Management.Automation.ActionPreferenceStopException: The running command stopped because the preference variable "ErrorActionPreference" or common parameter is set to Stop: 23/10/2018 10:12:54 AM Set-Datastore Storage I/O resource management is not supported on datastore '<datastore_name>'. Check your host version and datastore type.

Thanks in advance!

Windows Search, Agent 2.14

This is more of a informational post, since the Update to 2.14 (from 2.13) we had problems with our Windows Search service (WSearch) (our config before: enabled, startup: automatic). At computer start-up the Windows Search was running but the startup type was set to disabled, this caused problems with Outlook 2016 and the live search was not working. We couldn`t figured out what caused the issue and no GPO or UEM LogIn Script you change this back.

After Investigation we figured out that in the the new agent (2.14) there are new (undocumented) changes and 2 new Registry Key where added.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CloudVolumes\WSearch

ServiceStartNeeded=1 (dword) - default 0

StartType=2 (dword) - default 0

These two are controlling the Windows Search and we have set them to the above for our config.

Hi All,

Got a stand-alone esxi 6.5 host (no Vcenter) with a couple of live VM's on them. As of the last few weeks i haven't been able to access the Web UI at the example address of (https://192.168.1.2/ui/#/login ). The error message in IE is as shown in the following snippet:

esxi 6.5 error tls.PNG

I have followed a few guides including:

To disable TLS1.1 - ESXI TLS configuration - Super User

Anyone got any ideas? I feel like this is due to bowsers increasing their security and only allowing certain protocols, but using the guide mentioned, my settings are here:

What happens to replicated VM network configuration when recovered?

$

I've been unable to find details about what occurs to the guest vmnics upon recovery and would appreciate some clarification and / or guidance.  We are running ESX 6.5 with vSphere Replication 6.5.x.x replicating multiple VMs to a DR site.  We will be testing the failover / failback on test VMs next week but have not yet done so.  I am working on scripting the IP change as we will need to change all replicated VM IPs for the DR site subnet and initiate registration with DNS as well as force arp cache clear on PCs.  I expect that the vmNics get new MAC addresses which will cause Windows 2012 R2 (well any version of Windows) to default the configuration leaving behind the missing NICs hardware / software settings.

My questions are:

1)  Does this happen or if not what exactly does transpire in regard to vmNic configuration?

2)  If only IP is reset does VM retain the hardware settings the existing vmNic was configured for? This is especially important for us in regard to RDS on 2012 using VMXNET3 vmNics.

     We run an EHR that is written rather inefficiently for SQL server (no connection pooling or reuse) that requires us to modify the default hardware config or suffer significant performance      degradation.  In event of failover this will need to be scripted if the settings do not apply to the NIC that that VM boots with.

3) Do the above answers apply to failback? I assume yes but then again I would expect in failback for the VM to retain is previous MAC and Windows should have the settings in the registry but..

Of course as said we will test this next week but any prior knowledge would be a boon.

Thank you,

badgenes

Fusion 11 on Mojave -- getting "Too many virtual machines"

$

I installed Fusion 11 on a new 2018 MacBook running Mojave. Many times when I try to start a VM, I get an error about "Too many virtual machines" even though I'm not running any VMware VMs. Sometimes, a VM will start fine (so far failing is the majority case). I've tried manually uninstall and reinstalling Fusion a couple of times. I also thought the issue might be Docker running concurrently, but that doesn't seem to affect the problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Issue with vCenter 5.5

$

On Tuesday morning one of our physical hosts crashed. I managed to reboot the host OK, got all the VMs up and running again, but I've not been able to connect to vCenter through vSphere since.

I've tried rebooting the host, tried restoring both a recent backup and one a couple of months old to both the host it was running on and to another one, and have ensured that it has enough disk space (only using 41%) - none of which have worked.

I can ping the vCenter server, and connect to the web GUI, but every time I try to connect via vSphere I get the following error:

vSphere could not connect to <IP>.

An unknown connection error occurred. (The request failed because of a connection failure. (Unable to connect to the remote sever.))

Looking at the console on boot, the issues appears to be with the vpxd service as it stalls for a while on "Waiting for vpxd to initialize" before failing.

The vpxd log:

What if there is not enough file space for cleanup?

$

I have a 250GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro and run a Windows virtual machine that consumes 150GB of that hard disc space. Of course most of the rest of the hard disc stores the Mac operating system and applications. I have literally only 15 GB of free space left.

Looking at the hard disc settings in Fusion (V5) it recommends cleanup of the virtual machine and under general it says that I have 49GB of reclaimable space in that virtual machine. However if I click on cleanup it says that it cannot be completed because there is not enough free space in the file system. I should try again after I have freed up 65 GB which of course I cannot do...

Any idea how I can get out of this situation. Is it possible to use an external hard drive temporarily to create that space?

Thank you!

Skyline vs VMware HealthAnalyzer (PS delivered Health Check)

How is VMware Skyline differentiated compared to a professional services delivered Health Check (using VMware HealthAnalyzer)?

Is the Health Check service no longer of much value (unless you need a VMware specialist work with you to explain the findings/recommendations/justification)?

I understand that a PS led health check is high touch. I am mainly interested in the differences in the data collected/findings, analysis, and recommendations - since both seem to compare against VMware best practices. I know that the VHA does not look at log data or performance data whereas Skyline does.

Can I use multiple monitors with vRealize Automation

Hello all,

I find myself a bit perplexed.  I have a development group that I have deployed vRealize Automation 7.4 to support.  My only endpoint is my current ESXi 6.5 cluster.

My developers love the system and the flexibility it provides, but one consent complainant is the lack of multiple monitor support.

All users are on Zero Clients using Horizon View desktops from a different cluster.  The Desktop environment and the Dev / Environment are on separate VLAN's.

I have created a Windows 10 I am using as my template.  In the settings of the Virtual Machine I selected the Video card.  I changed to "Specify Custom Settings".  I changed the number of displays from 1 to 2.  I clicked the Video Memory Calculator and set the resolution to 1920X1200 which suggested a minimum of 28.13 MB.  I set the Total video memory to 30MB.  Then I restarted the Virtual Machine.

On my workstation I open vSphere using the HTML 5 client.  I navigate to the Virtual Machine and select "Launch Remote Console".  I expand the session to full screen and I see a button for "Cycle Multiple Monitors" - the options is also available in the VMRC drop down menu.  When selected an error message is presented "Cannot Use Multiple Monitors" The error also states that the Virtual machine's settings must be "Use host settings" and that I should consult VMware Player Help for more information.  My VMRC client is version 9.0.0 build 4288332.

After converting the Virtual Machine to a template, I created a VRA blueprint to deploy a VM and used that template.  Once deployed, on my Items tab I select "Connect using VMRC".  Following the same steps with the VMRC the "Cycle Multiple Monitors" does not do anything at all.

So, am I doing something wrong?  If VMRC does not support multiple monitors is their another solution?

How do I manually add driver for USB attached network interface

$

Hello,

     I have an ESXi v6.7 deployment on a Dell Optiplex 7040 hardware with one onboard NIC. I want to enable a 2nd NIC and have obtained a USB attached Ethernet adapter to that end. The device comes with a CD containing the needed driver files (with .c and .h extensions) with a makefile provided for compilation:

asix.c

asix.h

axusbnet.c

axusbnet.h

Makefile

readme

I am though, not certain on the system where to execute this so as to install the drivers and thereby the USB connected NIC. The instructions advise:

ASIX AX88178 USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter

ASIX AX88772 USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Network Adapter

ASIX AX88772A USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Network Adapter

ASIX AX88760 USB 2.0 MTT HUB and USB 2.0 to Fast Ethernet Combo Controller

ASIX AX88772B USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Network Adapter

Driver Compilation & Configuration on the Linux

============================================================================

This driver has been verified on Linux kernel 2.6.14 and later.

================

Prerequisites

================

Prepare to build the driver, you need the Linux kernel sources installed on the

build machine, and make sure that the version of the running kernel must match

the installed kernel sources. If you don't have the kernel sources, you can get

it from www.kernel.org or contact to your Linux distributor. If you don't know

how to do, please refer to KERNEL-HOWTO.

Note: Please make sure the kernel is built with one of the "Support for

       Host-side, EHCI, OHCI, or UHCI" option support.

===========================

Conditional Compilation Flag

===========================

[AX_FORCE_BUFF_ALIGN]

Description:

       There are alignment issues of USB buffer in some USB host controllers.

       Turn on this flag if the implementation of your USB host controller

       cannot handle non-double word aligned buffer.

       When turn on this flag, driver will fixup egress packet aligned on double

       word boundary before deliver to USB host controller.

Setting:

    1 -> Enable TX buffers forced on double word alignment.

    0 -> Disable TX buffers forced on double word alignment.

Default:

    0

================

Getting Start

================

1. Extract the compressed driver source file to your template directory by the

   following command:

    [root@localhost template]# tar -xf DRIVER_SOURCE_PACKAGE.tar.bz2

2. Now, the driver source files should be extracted under the current directory.

   Executing the following command to compile the driver:

    [root@localhost template]# make

3. If the compilation is well, the asix.ko will be created under the current

   directory.

4. If you want to use modprobe command to mount the driver, executing the

   following command to install the driver into your Linux:

    [root@localhost template]# make install

================

Usage

================

1. If you want to load the driver manually, go to the driver directory and

   execute the following commands:

    [root@localhost template]# insmod asix.ko

2. If you had installed the driver during driver compilation, then you can use

   the following command to load the driver automatically.

    [root@localhost anywhere]# modprobe asix

If you want to unload the driver, just executing the following command:

    [root@localhost anywhere]# rmmod asix

================

Special define

================

There is a RX_SKB_COPY preprocessor define in asix.h can solve rx_throttle problem

in some version of 3.4 Linux kernel. Removing the comment before the define can enable

this feature.

Thanks in advance for assistance in this regard.

migrate virtual machine from one host to another with no share storage

Two questions:

1. if I cancel the migration in the middle of the process, will it ruin the server?

2. What is the correct way to cancel the migration job? I remember that last time when I did, I did not have the option to cancel the job. The cancel button was gray out.

Please advise! Thank you very much!!!!

Display All the ESXi-CIMOM servers....Но хост так и не находится. Вот скриншот с putty, вроде все необходимое установленоscr.PNG@

VMware Skyline Operational Summary Report

Hi all,

I recently set up the Skyline collector in our first environment, and every time it runs we then get an email titled "VMware Skyline Operational Summary Report", letting us know an OSR is ready for download.

I'm likely missing something really simple, but I checked in the collector settings and online, but I can't find where to disable this email notification. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Cheers, Matt.
