I need to update our machine database with the WWPN and WWNN of each ESX host. These are stored as long integers. What is the correct way to deal with a long integer like one associated with a 64bit mac? Is there a mechanism within vRO for this? If the number was stored as a string I could work with it but when I try to convert it using .toString() I end up with an incorrect value.
ESX host WWPN or WWNN are stored as long numbers. How do I work with these values?
Requesting assistance: How To configure it correctly
Environment:
10 Physical servers on Network 10.10.20.x
ESXi 6.0 (4 servers) on Network 10.10.20.x
vCenter 6.0 (physical server) on Network 10.10.20.x
20+ VMs on Network 10.10.20.x
(1) dvSwitch for all 4 ESX servers
Cisco 7000 Switches (2 switches) on Mgmt Network 172.26.x.x
I have little or no experience with VMWare, and have just attended the two Cisco CCNA classes to give me a
foundation of knowledge to help me to configure network equipment to support the environnment.
I have been handed the above network to manage, and I need assistance to understand first... how ESXi should have
been set up, and in conjunction with that, how to configure the switches connecting the ESX and vSphere servers to
support the VM network.
I see several problems:
I have production servers on the .20 network, AND the ESX managment traffic on the same .20 network
I do not have vMotion configured, and do not have a separate network (or VLAN) on which to put that.
At this point, there are only (2) 1GB NICs in each ESXi server to carry all traffic.
In addition, I am being tasked to set up some VMs on a separate network, which needs to be segregated from the
production .20 network (this traffic will be on the 10.10.22.x network).
To me, all of the above seems to require setting up the ESX servers and the ports connecting the ESX to the Cisco
switch to support multiple VLANs.
My thoughts about what needs to be accomplished are the following:
1) Put the ESX servers themselves on the Management Network VLAN 26 (172.26.x.x) (configurable at the console of
each ESX server)... while keeping the VMs on the Production .20 Network VLAN 2
2) Ensure the vCenter server is also on the Management Network VLAN 26 so that it can manage the ESX Cluster.
3) configure the Cisco switch ports to Trunk mode - allowing all VLANs (native VLAN is VLAN 1).. meaning all
traffic ( ESX Mgmt VLAN26, Production .20 network VLAN2, .24 network VLAN22 ) would be in VLANS and all traffic is tagged.
4) after the above is working, add additional VLANs and networks in the 172.26.x.x range for vMotion, HA-Heartbeat, etc.
Before getting into the weeds on HOW to do this... Does this make sense? Am I missing or misunderstanding anything?
Thanks,

VPN from a vSphere 5.1 VM WIN7SP1Pro Fails
Hi,
Is there any reason why I cannot use VPN client software to connect to a Public facing private network?
- The VM can access the Internet fine.
- It connects and gets a private IP address
- It then fails "Client did not acknowledge banner request"
Support are stating the ports being blocked by a firewall or a non-IPSec aware NAT router and pointing the issue back to vSphere.
I stated that I am not running vShield Edge, NSX or any of the sort. I am just pointing my vswitches to the VLANs on the physical switches.
I am stating that the problem is the VPN software or the network Layer 3 routers.
I am just reaching out here to ensure I am not missing something on how this VM is routed on the intricacies of vSphere 5.1 networking that I maybe missing.
The only thing that comes close to this topic is people using VMWare Workstation and their problem was solved using bridge networking.

Problem downloading VMware Tools
I'm running VMware Workstation 12 Pro (12.1.1 build-3770994) on Windows 7. Each time I start VMware Workstation and then start up a VM, a Software Updates window opens:
"The following software is available for download: VMware Tools for WIndows 2000 or later - version 10.0.6".
If I click the Download and Install button, it goes through the downloading and verifying phases, but fails on the Updating phase, which a generic error:
"There was a problem updating a software component. Try again later and if the problem persists, contact VMware Support or your system administrator."
The only error details I can find is in the ui log:

I can't find any explanation of VMUICOM error 0x80004005.
Note that this error was occurring before before the 12.1.1 update, and is still occurring.
I think the tools build it currently has is 10.0.1.357.
Any idea how to fix this?
how to query for a virtualwire instance by name?
Hello,
I am relatively new to NSX, and to using REST APIs, so perhaps I am missing something obvious. I would like to be able to query the NSX REST API to find a particular virtualwire instance by its name (not its ID). I have tried the following GET request with no luck:
https://<nsx-manager-hostname>/api/2.0/vdn/virtualwires/?name=Web-Tier-1
Note that I am able to query all virtualwires by dropping the "?name=Web-Tier-1" part, and I am able to query on a particular virtualwire by its ID if I instead add the ID to the URL, e.g. "virtualwire-1".
If there is no way to query by name, then I will have to query all virtualwire and loop over the results to find the one with the name I am interested in, which seems absurd.
Thanks in advance.
Guest host do not turn on after power outage, how to fix ?
Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum so let me know if I done something wrong please !
I has a ESXi host and 2 guest servers.
I already setup host configuration -> Virtual Machine Startup / Shutdown. (please see attachment)
However the guest Servers still do not turn on after power outage.
is there any bug or did I miss other configuration ?
Many Thanks,

VMWare Horizon Client - white menu text
I installed VMware Horizon Client for Linux 64-bit (from https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?downloadGroup=VIEWCLIENTS_LINUX_35_64&productId=421&rPId=9425#product_downloads) following the instructions on p16 of https://www.vmware.com/pdf/horizon-view/horizon-client-linux-document.pdf.
All of the text for the menus and buttons is rendered in white, which on a light grey background is difficult to read. Please see the attached screenshot for an example using the Help > About dialog.
Is the text colour configurable and if so, where I should go to change it?

Log Insight 3.0 Integrated Load Balancer Query
So I have a three node Log Insight cluster and enabled the Integrated Load Balancer, entered the IP and FQDN which my clients are pointing to. All good so far.
I'd like to understand how the load balancing actually works, i.e. If one of the nodes becomes unavailable id still expect to be able to ping the ILB address? the behavouir I'm seeing at the moment is when the Master is down so is the ILB address, is this expected?

Easy VSAN question. Adding a new host to VSAN, impact to the VSAN cluster?
Hey guys,
Simple question. We have an existing ESXi 5.5 cluster that has six ESXi hosts configured in VSAN. Each of the six ESXi hosts are contributing 1 SSD drive (Fusion I/O card) and 1 spinning local hard disk. We want to add a 7th server but it only has a Fusion I/O SSD card and no spinning local disks (ESXi is on an internal SD card). So this 7th host only has 1 SSD disk to contribute to the VSAN.
Are there any issues with this? I figured not because you can add a host that contributes no storage so I'm assuming just contributing one SSD disk would be fine. Yes?
Lastly when we add the 7th host and tell VSAN to incorporate the SSD disk its not going to mess with the existing VSAN or any guests on it right? I mean it'll just take the new drive and add it to the VSAN with no downtime or surprises right? I'm pretty sure I know the answer to all these but management is cautious and we have no test lab for VSAN so we wanna play it safe.
Much appreciated.

Intermittent network issues particularly with linux vm's
Dear members,
I am experiencing a weird network connectivity issue in our environment.
Really appreciate if you could go through below details and provide your valuable suggestions.
Scenario:
1. Linux vms will lose network connectivity after vmotion to another host
2. Observed both on machines with single ip as well as multiple ips.
3. On machines with multiple ips, the connecivity will be fine on primary ip ( eg: ifcfg-eth0)
but other virtual interfaces will face issues (eg: ifcfg-eth0:0, ifcfg-eth0:1, ifcfg-eth0:2 etc)
4. During the issue, ping from virtual interfaces to default gateway will not work
5. Sometimes existing ssh sessions would remain fine but new sessions will not connect
6. Observed only on linux vms ( redhat/centos 6 and 7 )
7. When this happens to a particular vm, no connectivity issues observed on peer vms or on host
8. VM adaptor is vmxnet3
Workarounds:
1. Restart network service ( will break existing connections)
2. Add a new virtual network interface from vsphere console
I cannot isolate a particular area of issue yet
1. Occurs irrespective of hosts
2. Other vms on the box will work fine
3. All vms are on same dv port group
4. All vm's on same subnet
Configuration:
Dvswitch using 14 uplinks from 7 esxi hosts ( active 7, standby 7)
VM port group settings:
Load balancing: Route based on the originating virtual port ID
Network failover detection: Link status only
Notify switch: yes
Failback: yes
Vcenter : 5.5 build 3660016
Esxi : 5.5, 3568722
vmtools : 9355, 10240 version is available but not deployed on all machines.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I cannot understand why this issue is resolved, if i add additional network adaptor , later i remove it.
which make me think something is there on virtual adaptors and network stack on linux vms.
Does anyone know any similar issues with linux vms.
what I can do to test, investigate, or troubleshoot the issue?
Thank you very much.
Personas not syncing after update to v6.2
We took the plunge and updated from View 5.2 to Horizon 6.2 about 2 months ago. Initially, everything went fairly smoothly, the biggest issue was the new security that is enabled in v6.2. However, we've begun to realize that all is not well. We had a user who had a suspected malware incident, our standard plan is to rename their Persona folder, then copy anything they need over. However, while their new Persona folder was created, it's 100% empty, other than a .lck file. All we are trying to sync is their local appdata folder, as we use Windows Roaming Profiles for the rest of it. New staff members' Personas folders are always empty, and I've begun to suspect that nobody's has updated since we upgraded from 5.2 to 6.2.
I did file a ticket with VMware, however, we haven't made much progress. They did advise to roll the version of VMware tools from v10 to v9.4 under the vague pretense of 'known incompatibilities', which I did, but it didn't help.
After the move from Tools v10 to v9.4, there's actually more issues in the VMWVvp.txt log, generally stuff that looks like this:
[24418][05/03/2016 08:10:56:0128][RTOLogon!VMWQueryEA ] No EAs Found: File: \Users\user

I don't see these strings in the logs that I have when we were running on v10.
The other thing I find strange is this line:
[0][05/03/2016 07:53:44:0234][CRedirectedFolders::Load ] Failed Opening SOFTWARE\Policies\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\Persona Management\Service\Redirected Folders, 0x80070002
I've confirmed there is no 'Persona Management' key in the VMware VDM key in the registry.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I've attached the complete log.
windows center 6 setup issue?
So i am moving away from the center appliance and going to a windows system. Simple enough right? not really
I have a windows 2008 r2 that we are installing vcenter 6 on. The DNS resolves correctly, forward and reverse. example
nslookup servera.mydomain.us -> 10.1.1.5
nslookup 10.1.1.5 -> servera.mydomain.us
when i install vcenter 6, i use the FQDN for the server name. Install seems to be fine, but i cannot access the web client. it goes to a page cannot be displayed 404 error.
if I uninstall and use the IP instead of the FQDN, it works fine.
if i use the FQDN on the install, and try the IP to get to the web client, i get the cert warning and then when i click it, it goes to the FQDN but the page cannot be displayed
the url that shows after i click continue on the cert warning is this..
so anyone have any ideas? ever come across this on your installed before?
thanks all.
sorry - i should give some details of the setup i am doing.

vRealize Operations virtual machine HA alert.
All:
Could use a little help with a vRealize Operations notification. I have configured a 'Message Event Symptom Definition". This is searching for a string in the events for 'restarted virtual machine'. The goal here is to be notified when a virtual machine is reset because of an HA event. The problem and my question is with the Alert Definition. I can get it to work if I pick virtual machine as the base object and select my message event symptom definition. The problem with this is that we get an email for every single virtual machine that fails over. I have tried selecting host and cluster as the base object and then virtual machine as a decedent. The hope here is that we'd get one email that lists all of the virtual machines impacted. But once I selected the host or cluster as the base object I started getting alerts with the host name that contains a virtual machine that was impacted by HA. It does NOT list the virtual machines impacted. Any assistance truly appreciated!
PUT API REST call does not update role membership of Business Group
vRA 7
Using the PUT REST call detailed here to update a Business Group: vRealize Automation 7.0
/api/tenants/{tenantId}/subtenants/{id}
I send Body text as detailed for a subtenant here, example below: vRealize Automation 7.0
{
"id": "f8e0d99e-c567-4031-99cb-d8410c841ed7",
"name": "BusinessGroup01",
"description": "Business Group 01",
"subtenantRoles": [ {
"name": "Business Group Manager",
"scopeRoleRef" : "CSP_SUBTENANT_MANAGER",
"principalId": [
{
"domain": "vrademo.local",
"name": "tenantadmin01"
},
{
"domain": "vrademo.local",
"name": "tenantmanager01"
}
]
},
{
"name": "Basic User",
"scopeRoleRef": "CSP_CONSUMER",
"principalId": [
{
"domain": "vrademo.local",
"name": "tenantusers01"
}
]
} ,
{
"name": "Support User",
"scopeRoleRef": "CSP_SUPPORT",
"principalId": [
{
"domain": "vrademo.local",
"name": "tenantsupportusers01"
}
]
} ],
"extensionData": {
"entries": [
{
"key": "iaas-machine-prefix",
"value": {
"type": "string",
"value": "87e99513-cbea-4589-8678-c84c5907bdf2"
}
},
{
"key": "iaas-manager-emails",
"value": {
"type": "string",
"value": "busgroupmgr01@vrademo.local"
}
}
]
},
"tenant": "Tenant01"
}
All items detailed in the JSON are updated successfully, except for anything in subtenantRoles which seems to be ignored. So neither Business Group Manager, nor Support Users, nor Users are updated.
If I send the same Body text (minus ID) to:
POST /api/tenants/{tenantId}/subtenants
then a Business Group is successfully created, including the subtenantRoles.
Anyone else experience this?
