Guys,

After updating to RHEL 6.8 64bit (2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64), Workstation is unable to start.  We get the "unable to start services" error.

How would you all advise to fix this?  The log is attached.

Thanks!

A recent task called 'NetApp Storage Discovery is stuck on 'In progress' and will not clear. How do I go about clearing this task from the 'Recent Task' tab? This task is not running. The vsphere host was powered off during this task. The task has been displaying for two days.

Moving ESXi 5.1 host into completely new vCenter 6 - license?

$

Hi All -

If I take an ESXi 5.1 host, previously managed (and licensed) via a given vCenter (also v5.1) and its management keys in inventory, then I disconnect/remove that host from the 5.1 vCenter and connect it to a completely new vCenter, what happens to the host licensing?

Does it disappear and become a 60 day eval, or does its license key move WITH the host into the new vCenter?  (The new vCenter in this scenario would have absolutely zero ESXi host license keys with which to apply to existing ESXi 5.1 hosts moved under it)

Just wondering what 'happens' in this scenario as I document our would-be steps for migration.  Yes, I know this could/should all be tested 'in the lab' but don't get me started on that.  Thanks for any feedback on what I can expect.

My best guess is that the host will LOSE its license the moment it becomes a 'standalone' ESXi host when disconnected and removed from the old vCenter (via 'Remove' command).  I just want to make sure it's otherwise fully functional, whether it has running VMs on it at the time or not (although yes, I'll put it into maintenance mode prior to removing from the old vCenter and joining the new one).

And yes, of course I have old sets of ESXi 5.1 license keys from the existing environment.  I'm just trying to set expectations as to what happens licensing-wise once I move the host from the old to new vCenter.  I have all technical pieces pretty much figured out, including SVS and DVS networking considerations.  Thanks.

Content Library is evil!

Hi,

I just want other users know that the content library feature is more than just a little bit buggy. We use this feature for a while now and noticed that VM's were deployed on scratch datastores, temporary datastores and so on. It turns out that even if I choose a certain storage policy and datastore (cluster) the content library deployment process does silently create the VM's on a completely different datastores. Without any information, error, warning. We noticed this after a couple of weeks because scratch datastores were filling up, VM's that were created on a transfer datastore that was mapped only to one host in a cluster could not vMotioned (thank god no HA was triggered in this cluster while the VM was running on this host/datastore). I already tried a workaround and created a role without permissions to create VM's on the affected datastores. This permission is completely ignored by the content library deployment process. Even if a user can't access the affected datastore in vCenter.

VMware confirmed the bug a while ago, but there is no KB arcticel and no hotfix. This sucks and is from my point of view a critical bug.

Newly created user in vsphere.local gets incorrect username/password on login to vcsa

vSphere 6

2 SSO services installed on Windows Machines

Not load balanced.

PSC/VCSA 6 pointed at one of the above SSO servers.

  • Can log in as administrator@vsphere.local fine
  • Can log in as a user from an Active Directory Identity Source which is in the SSO config.
  • Create a brand new user in @vsphere.local and set the password, log out, Try and log in to vCenter via Web Client with brand new user and newly set password and you get "Incorrect username/password"

I've tried repointing the VCSA at the other SSO server (replication is working fine) and restarting vcsa services

Could log back in as the above, but still not with the newly created user.

At wit's end with vCenter Server Connectivity Issue

We’ve had a support ticket open since August 2015 regarding hosts spontaneously disconnecting from our windows based vcenter server. It’s actually the latest in a long line of support tickets related to the same issue. The original going back to November of 2014!
The ticket was created as high/critical, but yet our support has been very lax, and the prevailing suggestion is basically just to move our vcenter to a new server. I’d like to avoid such an ordeal.
It was suggested that we create a ticket with Microsoft because VMware thought the issue was with the OS, but Microsoft has been even less helpful; suggesting a single hot fix ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2775511 ) to remedy the situation, and it didn’t work. Originally we were told we needed another hot fix that covered kernel socket leaks, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2577795, that was applied in December of 2014 but did not help.
Multiple times a day we get alerts for ‘Hosts not responding’ from log insight. These emails are basically just a summary of alerts on vcenter that match the event alarm for when a host is not responding. If you happen to be logged into the vcenter via the vsphere client you’ll see the host get disconnected along with all of its VMs. This lasts for under a minute, but when checking logs on the host itself it doesn’t appear to be aware of any networking issues. This leads us to believe the issue is with the vcenter server.
We’ve run perfmon and special scripts created by VMware support to monitor resource usage and network connectivity/port exhaustion while these events happen, but no smoking gun has been found. At one point VMware suggested we add more CPUs to the VM, going from an already over provisioned 8 vCPU to 10, but that didn’t help.
This is a relatively small environment of under 60 hosts and approximately 425 VMs, but the vcenter server is configured with 8 vCPU and 20GB of memory.
No other products are installed on the vcenter other than the related VMware products; web client, VUM, dump collector, SSO, inventory service. We run McAfee MOVE off-server virus scan which was called out by VMware support, but we need to run something and this should be the best option as scanning is not done on the server itself. We have updated the client to the latest version at their suggestion, but no change. We also have Veritas netbackup client installed for backups. Another item we need, but we have tried removing it temporarily with no help.
Support also thought maybe having vROps tied into this vcenter was a problem, but we temporarily stopped data collection and no improvement was noticed.
At one point they called out VDP being to blame and an update to that would fix it. It didn’t.

At this point I believe they have given up on doing any troubleshooting and would like us to just move this to a new server. I feel like that’s an easy way out for them and a lot of work on my part. I’m fairly confident the issue lies with vcenter server, and think surely there could be more that can be done to narrow things down and possibly fix the issue.
This VM was originally deployed as vcenter server 5.1 and upgraded throughout the years to the current 5.5U3b. It is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 and SQL is running on a separate VM.

Has anybody had a similar issue they were able to solve, or have any suggestions other than a slash and burn approach?
Thanks

BSOD when using Workstation Player

Dear developers,

we are using VMware Workstation Player 12.1.0 on Windows 10 and Windows 8 x64, Guest VM is a stripped down version of Linux (kernel 3.10) using latest open-vm-tools (same as in https://communities.vmware.com/message/2595398#2595398). We're also transferring lots of vsock data over different vsock connections simultaneously.

After a few hours of runtime Windows crashes into BSOD. Minidump analysis:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

FAULTING_IP:

vmci+95a8

fffff800`078f65a8 488b54c808      mov     rdx,qword ptr [rax+rcx*8+8]

Screenshot of BSOD and Windows minidump are attached. Nothing special was found in the logs, probably they were not flushed to the disk when BSOD happened.

Not sure if anyone has seen this warning in windows but i'm getting "The winlogon notification subscriber <VMWVvpsvc> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logon)."  And my client is taking almost 3 to 5mins to logon.  I haven't tried this with and without persistent disk and redirection of the profile using persona.  I haven't tried it with just persistent disk and no redirection.  Anyone have any ideas what would be causing this.

Window focus issues in Unity mode

$

I updated to Fusion 8.1.0 while still using Yosemite (OS X 10.10) and immediately noticed an issue where windows for Windows applications would take focus when the cursor moved over them or a Windows application was performing a background operation without user interaction despite the fact that I was working in an OS X application. At the time there were other screen rendering issues and everything seemed to be resolved once I upgraded to El Capitan (OS X 10.11), as that upgrade had several enhancements for iMacs with retina displays.

Well today, in particular, I noticed that the window focus problem was back in full swing. I was working in OmniGraffle and every time I navigated my cursor over to the Color palette, the Microsoft Word window behind the Color palette would take focus and all other Windows windows would also come to the foreground ahead of any OS X windows that were in front of them. Also, anytime an e-mail popup occurs from Outlook, all of the Windows application windows come to the foreground despite the fact that I am working in an OS X window. I use Unit mode because of my workflow—I need to be able to switch between Mac and Windows applications seamlessly just as if I were working in a single OS—and this bug is disrupting my workflow.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

Horizon 7 Instant Clone failed to update machine group policy

We receive the following error intermittently when provisioning instant clones:

Instant Clone agent initialization state error (24): Failed to update the machine group policy (waited 30 seconds)

The provisioning will retry several times and eventually complete.  I've verified that our Active Directory sites/subnet, etc are configured correctly.  We don't have issues with linked clones.  Anyone experienced this issue?

vDS and datacenters

$

Good afternoon, all!

I'm looking into configuring vDS instances in my datacenters.  However, I'm a little unclear on what, precisely, a "datacenter" constitutes in this context.  Here's the outline:

I have two physical locations separated by about 30 minutes and connected by an MPLS circuit.  Hosts, networks and VMs are managed by a single vCenter in my main datacenter.  The remote DC networks have different subnets, with Cisco routers on the two MPLS ends. There is no appreciable difference in the VMs running in the two locations; that is, there are mail servers, database servers and so on running on both sides.  Other than the different subnets, it's pretty much a duplicate of the main DC.

In this scenario, would a single vDS be workable, or would I need to install a second vCenter server, move the hosts to the new center and define separate vDS instances for each physical location?

This may be an easy answer, but I haven't found it yet.......need to work on my Google-fu....

Thanks to all for looking!

How to use pysphere to edit NIC( VirtualE1000 ) to toggle between plugged and unplugged state

$

What I am trying to accomplish is to connect to an existing VMware VM and then access the virtual eth connections. Once a particular NIC is found, I want to toggle its state from UNPLUGGED to PLUGGED and vice versa.

To accomplish that I use the following code to create a new eth connection to play with:

#Invoke ReconfigVM_Task
request
= VI.ReconfigVM_TaskRequestMsg()
_this
= request.new__this(vm._mor)
_this
.set_attribute_type(vm._mor.get_attribute_type())
request
.set_element__this(_this)
spec
= request.new_spec()

#Add a NIC.
dev_change
= spec.new_deviceChange()
dev_change
.set_element_operation("add")
nic_ctlr
= VI.ns0.VirtualE1000_Def("nic_ctlr").pyclass()
nic_backing
= VI.ns0.VirtualEthernetCardNetworkBackingInfo_Def("nic_backing").pyclass()
nic_backing
.set_element_deviceName(label)
nic_ctlr
.set_element_addressType("generated")
nic_ctlr
.set_element_backing(nic_backing)
nic_ctlr
.set_element_key(4)
dev_change
.set_element_device(nic_ctlr)

spec
.set_element_deviceChange([dev_change])
request
.set_element_spec(spec)
ret
= hostcon._proxy.ReconfigVM_Task(request)._returnval

#Wait for the task to finish
task
=VITask(ret, hostcon)
status
= task.wait_for_state([task.STATE_SUCCESS, task.STATE_ERROR])
if status == task.STATE_SUCCESS:

print"VM %s successfully reconfigured"% vm
elif status == task.STATE_ERROR:

print"Error reconfiguring vm: %s"% vm, task.get_error_message()

As a result of the above code, I see the following gets created:

eth3  :1Gb/s TP UNPLUGGED|UP  --None--   -NoIPv6-

But now I am stuck at trying to change this UNPLUGGED field. Can this even be changed at the VM level? or this part needs to be changed at virtual switch level? Asking because I found online that the "PLUGGED/UNPLUGGED" information comes from the virtual switch entry? Is that true?

VDP tasks not visible in vSphere Web Client

I configured a backup job in VDP which backups all my vms at night. This job runs fine but I never see any tasks about VDP in the task list in VDP ?

The reporting by email works fine but when I run a manual backup job or if I would like to know if VDP is performing maintenance tasks it would be nice to see this in the task list.

I already opened a support ticket for this but Vmware support told me this was normal behaviour which I seriously doubt ???

I think this has something to do with the SSO configuration because there is a note on page 14 of the VDP admin guide but to me the configuration seems correct.

VDP 6.1 on vSphere 6.0 web client fails to show status of recent tasks ( VICLIENT shows something completely different...actual information!!!)

$

Hello,

Running vCenter 6.0 and VDP 6.1 and after launching a backup job ( through the vSphere web client) I can see the job start but only using the viclient's recent tasks ( it DOES NOT show any status or progress through the web client).  Now what makes this problem an issue is that one of the VM's I had in the backup job failed to create a shapshot.  The ONLY REASON I know this is because the viclient recent tasks showing the progress of the backup job alerted me to the issue.  Even after a refresh several times in the webclient there is not indication that the job was ever even run, completed, or FAILED under the Recent Tasks section.  Looking in the Alarms section of the web client also fails to show any indication that there was a failed snapshot on one of the backup jobs.  The only way to view the status was to look at the Tasks Console in the web client and there I could also see the job and failed backup but unless you are already looking for the failure you would never have known.

It is very concerning when VMware is pushing clients to use the web client more and the viclient less yet seems we keep losing functionality.  Has anyone else had this issue with VDP 6.1?  If so is there some fix to allow "RECENT TASKS" to actually show the same status in the web client and in the viclient ( They are both talking to the same vCenter so why dont they contain the same information????)  The exact builds I am using are the following

vCenter Server 6.0.0 build 3018524

VDP 6.1.1.19

ESXi 6.0.0 build 3620759

And before its suggested the run the VDP 6.1.2 ( latest version) I already tried that and that version had bigger issues freezing up and failing so the version I am using seemed to be more stable :-)

Problem in vMotion traffic and HA failure detection and Shown the Network Partitioned State

$

I have some problem when i am trying to run vMotion between some Hosts. in this situation, I face randomly some errors which indicate HA error and partitioned mode detection.

my settings in all Hosts is the same and all of them are ESXi5.5 u2 with vCenter 5.5 and i have following settings:

in every ESXi, I have 2 virtual switch, one switch is standard and another is distribute switch

VMnic0 & 3 is connected to standard switch (2NICs are teamed )&

VMnic1,2 is connected to distribute switch (2NICs are teamed )

in every standard switch in any ESXi, I create 2 port group which is one for Management traffic with 10.10.10.0/24 & gateway=10.10.10.1 in vLAN 80

the second port group called vMotion with 10.40.40.0/24 with gateway=10.10.10.1 in vLAN 100 ( There aren't vLAN 100 on standard switch and it is in distribute switch)

in the last, When I run vMotion to migrate VMs, it may be shown red alerts on Hosts icon and most of time it will be fade out rapidly!

I believe that this error will be related to one of this items:

1-mismatch setting in port group management and vmotion

2- two VMnics on standard switch is Acive and is teamed

3- physical network connectivity between hosts to physical switchs and may be mismatch configuration on physical CISCO switch (TOR)

4- or other hidden secrets

what are some reason to this issue? thanks for all friends who are focused on this issue

Log Insight with NSX Proto 1

Hello,

We are using Log Insight to view NSX information, we have a Tag setup that sends us blocks, for the most port we se source/destionation, protocol and port, however we are seeing some data where we get the Source and Destination however the Ports are empty and the firewall_protocol is coming over as "PROTO 1".  It's really hard to make rules from that since we don't know Ports, we do know the Traffic is coming from a F5 load balancer to a VM.

Any idea  how we can add a rule to allow this traffic without opening it up all the way?
