vSphere client could not connect to VC

$

I was trying to upgrade the vcenter version from 5.5 U3E to 6.5 U3. Upgrade process failed and we restored the changes from snapshots and SQL Server database restored from backup. Post restoration, Inventory is empty and unable to connect through domain ID. In SQL Database, found two schema using. One is dbo and other one is VMW. While trying SQL query, vCenter Data's are available in VMW Schema, but vcenter can't read the data from VMW. Can we move/alter/copy data from VMW Schema to default schema i.e. dbo? Does it will resolve the issue?

I have created a new Windows 2012 R2 server and installed fresh copy of vcenter 5.5 U3E. Also pointed to the existing external SQL database from ODBC, test connection is successful however vcenter can't read data from Database.

Configuration are as below:

  1. VCenter Server - VC Version 5.5 U3E, Installed on Windows 2008 R2 server
  2. SQL Server version is MS SQL 2008 R2 Ent Service Pack 2.

Hello! It's been a minute since I last posted here with my own topic. I now have a dedicated ESXi server in the works, and am planning to start using it 24/7 by the end of this year. Here are the specs for the hardware:

CSE  :: HPE ProLiant DL580 G7
CPU  :: 4x Intel Xeon E7-8870's (10c/20t each; 40c/80t total)
RAM :: 64GB (16x4GB) DDR3-1333 PC3-10600R ECC
STR  :: 1x HP 518216-002 146GB HDD (ESXi, VMware Linux Appliance, System ISOs) +
                        1x Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB SATA SSD (vSphereFlash Read Cache) +

                        4x HP 507127-B21 300GB HDDs +

                        1x 500GB Seagate Video ST500VT003 HDD (Remote Development VM)

             1x LSI SAS 9201-16e HBA SAS card (4-HDD DAS) +

                        1x Mini-SAS SFF-8088 to SATA Forward Breakout x4 cable +

                        1x Kingwin MKS-435TL (4x 3.5in HDD cage) +

                        4x HITACHI HUA722020ALA330 HDDs

PCIe :: 1x HP 512843-001/591196-001System I/O board +

                        1x HP 588137-B21; 591205-001/591204-001 PCIe Riser board
GPU :: 1x nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB +

                        2x1x nVIDIA Tesla K10's
SFX  ::  1x Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Rx

NIC   ::  1x SolarFlare SFN5322F +

                        1x HP 491838-001 (NC375i)

FAN  ::  4x Arctic F9PWM 92mm case fans **

PSU  ::  4x 1200W Server PSU's (HP 441830-001/438203-001)

PRP  ::  1x Dell MS819Wired Mouse

Parts marked with * have not been purchased/sourced yet. Those marked with ** are already in-house, but require further planning/modification before they can be added to the server.

As of now, the fans aren't really required for functionality. They were meant to help quiet the server down a bit, but they requiresomemodification to work. This part can wait.

Here is the current software configuration plan for the server:

*  Temporary task that will be replaced by a permanent, self-hosted solution

** Can benefit from port forwarding, but will be primarily tunnel-bound

^  Tunnel-bound (VPN/SSH) role - not port forwarded/exposed to the Internet

+ Active Directory enabled - Single Sign On (SSO)

Here is the current resource allocation plan for the server:

  • VMware nix Appliance     :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD - false, dedicatedGPU -  false,     2c/4t + 4GB
  • Temporary/Testing VM     :: 24/7 - false,  dedicatedHDD - false, dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *
  • Windows  Server  2016     :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  false,    8c/16t + 12-16GB
  • macOS Server 10.14.X      :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD -  true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,    8c/16t + 12GB
  • Artix Linux - Xfce ISO       :: 24/7 - true,   dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  false,    8c/16t + 12GB
  • Windows 10 Enterprise    :: 24/7 - false,  dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *
  • Remote Development VM :: 24/7 - false, dedicatedHDD -  true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *

VMs marked with an * cannot be run at the same time. Only one of them can ever run at any given moment. MacOS and Linux would have gotten a Radeon/FirePro (ie., Rx Vega 64), for best compatibility and stability, but market forces have prevented this. Windows 10 gets the Creative Audigy Rx. The MacOS and Linux VMs get whatever audio the Tesla K10's provide (either that or a software solution). Windows 10, Remote Development, and the Temp/Testing VM will be put to sleep (or offed) until they are needed (Wake on LAN), since they don't host any essential services.

There are three other mirrors for this project, in case you're interested in following individual conversations from the other sites (in addition to this thread).

P.S. Out of all the sites that I've ever used, this forum has one of the best WYSIWYG editors I've used in a while Kudos to the devs!

Host lock screen keeps activating

host: windows 10

guest: lubuntu 20.04 (also with previous versions, also with ubuntu)

open-vm-tools installed

Problem: when guest is in full screen and no action is done for a while, the host lock screen timeout is triggered

Desired behavior: when guest is full screen, host lock screen timeout should not trigger.

     As an example, Chrome with youtube in fullscreen on host does not cause lock screen to trigger after some minutes

Notes:

I cannot change nor disable lock screen settings on host

guest lock screen / screen saver is not triggered

Does anybody know how to fix this behavior?

Thanks

Disconnecting NAS with non-os folders

Hi,

Some devices in our rack doesn't have redundant power supply'options and were running for a while on single power. Now we need to connect them to dual power using a power switch that has dual power. Problem is two of these devices are NAS devices that are mounted as datastores in vmware. They are used for backups. So some servers have drives mounted for packup target from this datastore.

What would be the best way to accomplish the power off/ power on of NAS during the power source change without turning off the VM?

As they are only used for backups, Can I just unmount the drives from inside all VM guest OSes that are using them and then unmount them from Host configuration and turn off? Or is it mandatory to turn the VMs off? Just incase a there is a power outage before this change and NAS got shut down, Will only the drives goes inaccessible or the VM using it also goes become unusable?

NAS LUN not being presented to second ESXi 6.5 host (Essentials Plus)

My church has Vsphere Essentials Plus licensing.  We have created two ESXi 6.5 hosts.  We have a iSCSI NAS storage device.

We were completely successful creating the first ESXi 6.5 host and presenting the iSCSI LUN/Datastore but when we attempted to present and setup the same Datastore on the second ESXi 6.5 host we were unable to do so.  Both Physical servers are exactly the same make/model and have the same physical configuration.

What can be wrong?

migrating KVM LVM images to vmware

I am using KVM on Ubuntu Server 10.04. and Virtual Machines are running on it in LVM.
I have to migrate some of them to Vmware server.How can I achieve this.
I searched and came across some links but they all talked converting vmdk images to qcow or so.
In this case I have OS in LVM.

http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/convert-vmware-vmdk-to-kvm-qcow2-or-virtualbox-vdi/

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/224712

but any of the above did not helped me.

Can any one suggest me what do I need to do to achieve the same?

Smart Card PIN does not popup during direct agent login

CAC in general is working as I can RDP to the virtual desktop via PIN. But the PIN box does not show up during direct connection via view client.

I thought the direct agent bypasses the connection server for broker authentication and passes the pin to the destination VMs middleware and verified against the local store self-signed certificate generated by the view direct agent installation?

What will happen to vSphere Integrated Containers?

$

Hi all,

I've been trying for days to deploy Kubernetes on vSphere but I keep failing--I mean--I keep failing getting a deployment where I feel confident enough to deploy from scratch without following some guide like I can do with every other thing in the infrastructure. It's just too complicated and, since I haven't run Kubernetes anywhere ever, to me the goal is the same as vSphere Integrated Containers' but with more steps. I know it's more than that but I only need an easy way to manage containers without having to think where to stick 'em and optionally can show status on vCenter/Fusion/ESXi.

I'd like to keep using VIC but on its last release, around the time Kubernetes on vSphere was released, things seem to just have stopped plus it always felt like "in the works" to begin with, so I'm unsure if it's a good idea or not. I can't find anything that mentions both VIC and Kubernetes (vSphere 7) anywhere to find some sort of progression/pivot there.

Was VIC abandoned? I know it's may be kept alive by the open source community but it might as well flocked away to Kubernetes because it's the hot new thing of the same interest. Was there a statement or something like that? I don't really follow this and I miss a lot of stuff--for instance, this year I learned I had included access to the newest Log Insight and I was still using 4-something.

Thanks!

Sound distortion and slightly slow program after windows 10 update

$

Host Win10 and running WinXP as a guest OS for a legacy program using VMware Workstation 15.5.1.  (new last January when I upgraded from Win7 to Win10)  After a major windows 10 update a couple of days ago (beyond the normal security or monthly updates), the sound inside the guest OS is very rough.  The boot up tones play fine when starting the guest OS, but after that it gets rough.  This is true for even simple WAV files like a notification tone.  I also noticed a slight lag in the program I am running inside the guest OS.  Normally, doing something like starting a New project would give me my first window in a split second.  That is now like 5-7 seconds.  Or, opening existing file folders would happen near instant, but even a folder with only about 80 files (all under 100KB each) can take 30-40 seconds just to get the list.  Then I came across some forums where people mentioned running Windows Media Player but minimized inside the guest OS.  I tried that, and the sounds corrected and the lag disappeared as long as WMP is running.  If I stop it, the problems return.  This includes the tones played when closing WinXP being rough.  I'm just wondering if there might be something in the vmx file that could be adjusted.  ---  Other things I have tried are to update the vmware tools...no change.  Update sound driver inside guest OS...no change.  I tried adding   pciSound.useSoundLib = "FALSE"  to the vmx file based on some other posts...no change.  ---  I am far from a computer expert.  I depend upon this legacy software for my business every day, and that is why I use the VMware to run WinXP.  Any help for a novice techy level would be appreciated.

My current vmx file below in case it helps.

3 Datastores have become unmountable on all hosts

Hi community

I have a large VMWare esxi environment with multiple hosts and clusters and multiple datastores.

3 of my datastores have suddenly become unmountable\inaccessible.

I have made sure the mapping and zoning on the storage is correct and all the hosts are mapped to all the datastores.

I dont know what else i can do to access these datastores again. I have multiple VMs that are now also inaccessible because of this and I cannot migrate them or do anything at all to bring them back online

Sync folders to OneDrive using VMware DEM/UEM

$

We are testing UEM/DEM and FSLogix on Horizon and have a use case to sync folders like My Documents etc. to OneDrive. We were using computer configuration policy "Silently move Windows known folders to OneDrive" (Use Group Policy to control OneDrive sync settings - OneDrive | Microsoft Docs) to achieve this, but with UEM/DEM, is there a better way of doing this? As you can see, this is a computer policy and since UEM/DEM handles only user policies I was wondering whether we can get rid of this GPO and achieve this via DEM.

Any thoughts?
