iSCSI sharing between two separately managed clusters

$

Hi,

Just after a bit of advise regarding sharing iSCSI LUN's between ESXi clusters (separate vCenters). This is a very basic overview of my setup:

+--------------------------------------+       +--------------------------------------+

| VCENTER1                             |       | VCENTER2                             |

| +----------+ +---------+ +---------+ |       | +----------+ +---------+ +---------+ |

| | ESXI1    | | ESXI2   | | ESXI3   | |       | | ESXI4    | | ESXI5   | | ESXI6   | |

| +-----|----+ +----|----+ +----|----+ |       | +-----|----+ +----|----+ +----|----+ |

+-------|-----------|-----------|------+       +-------|-----------|-----------|------+

        |           |           |                      |           |           |

         |-----------+-----------+----------------------+-----------+-----------+

        |

+-------|------------------------------+

| QNAP ISCSI target                    |

| +----------+ +---------+ +---------+ |

| | LUN_0    | | LUN_1   | | LUN_2   | |

| | VMFS1    | | VMFS2   | | VMFS3   | |

| +----------+ +---------+ +---------+ |

+--------------------------------------+

My intentions are for hosts ESXI1/2/3 (i.e. VCENTER1 cluster) to share LUN_0 and for hosts ESXI4/5/6 (i.e. VCENTER2 cluster) to share LUN_1 & LUN_2

My concern is all 6 hosts automatically attach all 3 LUNS (and mount associated VMFS volumes) so that the 3 VMFS volumes appear in both vCenter server inventories. This is not a problem for me in itself as none of the VM's on vCenter1 will ever use the datastores VMFS2 or VMFS3 and none of the VM's on vCenter2 will use the datastore VMFS1.

However I am concerned that there may be performance, file locking or possible data corruption issues by even allowing two separately managed clusters to have 'access' to the same LUN's/datastores concurrently regardless of being 'used' or not.

I have tried detaching the disk devices on the relevant hosts. e.g detach the device associated with LUN_0 on ESXi4/5/6, while this looks like it stops the hosts from accessing LUN_0 it does permanently flag the VMFS2 and VMFS3 datastores on vCenter2 in an error state as "(inaccessable)" which is not desirable. Also not sure if the detach is persistent across host reboots or may unintentionally get reattached.

So is it safe to just allow all 6 hosts to have all 3 datastores mounted? and could there be possible locking or performance issues resulting from this?

Cheers,

Steve.

iSCSI vs NFS

Hi

VMware has not released this paper's new version since 2012 - https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/storage_protocol_comparison-white-paper.pdf

I went though some old post & got sense from all that NFS is better for below reasons

1. Easy Setup

2. Easy to expand

3. UNMAP is advantage on iSCSI

4. VMFS is quite fragile if you use Thin provisioned VMDKs. A single powerfailure can render a VMFS-volume unrecoverable.

5. NFS datastores immediately show the benefits of storage efficiency (deduplication, compresson, thin provisioning) from both the NetApp and vSphere perspectives

6. Netapp specific : The NetApp NFS Plug-In for VMware is a plug-in for ESXi hosts that allows them to use VAAI features with NFS datastores on ONTAP

7. Netapp specific : NFS has autogrow

8. When using NFS datastores, space is reclaimed immediately when a VM is deleted

9. Performance is almost identical

Please list out if i miss anything & share comments

Move to a vSphere 7 environment - recommended approach

Hi,

Just thinking, how would one best start thinking about moving to (or better introducing) a vSphere 7 environment when current setup is on 6.x amongst all clusters in different DC's?

Would one consider to upgrade the VCSA and deploy future/new clusters with 7.0 so ending up having a mix of 6.x and 7.0

Would you recommend that new license are bought for 7.x rather than 6.x, along with a VCSA license upgrade?

Compatibility would also be key to check to make sure any 3rd parties interacting with VCSA do support 7.0x

Would appreciate your views or thoughts

Thanks

ESXi 7.0 installer not detecting LSI 9240-8i RAID controller

Hi All

According to the ESXi 7.0 hardware compatibility list, the LSI 9240-8i RAID controller is supported natively.

However, when installing with the standard ESXi 7.0 ISO, the installer fails to detect the controller and reports unsupported hardware found.

The server is a Lenovo TS140, with onboard SATA disabled.

I am able to access the 9240's web bios to configure the virtual drives, etc.

Windows 10 will install on the same box and detect the controller with no issues.

Am I missing something obvious?

VIO 7 VDS deployment does not finish

I try to deploy a new VIO 7 HA, VDS deployment.

At the end the deployment wizard does not close the window if I press on the finish "button", but the deployment starts if i press cancel and refresh the window (maybe a UI issue).

The manager does not make any changes in the vCenter (like adding portgroups etc.) And the status stays at "validating"

If i login to the manager and do a "kubectl get pods -A" I get a Pod with error state:

...

openstack            create-objects-neutron-neutron1-262ksqffhf-bj89d                  0/1     Error       0          2m20s

...

but the log does not show something meaningful to me:

kubectl logs create-objects-neutron-neutron1-262ksqffhf-bj89d -n openstack

time="2020-07-14T09:38:56Z" level=info msg="successfully created k8sClientSet"

time="2020-07-14T09:38:56.18Z" level=info msg="detecting plugin configuration and parent resource" kind=Neutron name=neutron1 namespace=openstack

time="2020-07-14T09:38:56.183Z" level=error msg="failure while fetching parent resource for Neutron 'neutron1' (namespace='openstack'): vcenters.vio.vmware.com \"vcenter1\" not found" kind=Neutron name=neutron1 namespace=openstack

Does anybody know how to debug this further?

Configure a third DNS entry?

Hey,

I want to configure more than 2 DNS servers for a ESXi 5.1 host.

Per vSphere-Client, or per DCUI I only can set 2 entries for that.

Is it possible to implement a third DNS server??

Best Regards,

Andre

VUM with custom vendor images

$

Hi,

Are the predefined Critical Host Patches and vSAN Cluster baselines applicable when using custom vendor ESXi images?

(They show as non compliant but are these really meant to work/tested with vendor custom ESXi?)

If not how should one check for updates when using custom vendor ESXi images and can these checks/downloads be integrated in VUM?

Dell/HP are typical examples where custom images are used so not sure if VUM is still applicable to patch such vendor ESXi images.

Thanks

File lock error messages in log when browsing shared iSCSI datastore

$

Hi All,

I am new to using ESXi hosts on shared iSCSI datastore but pretty much have everything up and running however I am noticing a strange issue when browsing the files on the shared datastore.

When I browse the files on the datastore it takes ages to show the files when I switch between folders. If I go in to the events log on one of the hosts I see a heap of file lock errors logged.

Lock(s) held on file XXXXXXXX-ctk.vmdk by other host(s).

Exclusive Lock(s) held on a file on volume 5f2e9bde-d7f37ea2-2151-a0369f8af178. numHolders: 0. gblNumHolders: 0. Locking Host(s) MAC: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

it basically repeats these two error messages in the event log for every file in the folder.

The MAC address appears to be that of the host that is currently running the VM for whose folder I am browsing so that host having a lock on the files is normal I would think.

Am I correct in assuming that vCenter uses only one of the hosts in the cluster as a proxy to browse the iSCSI datastore? My reasoning is that all these errors only appear in only one hosts event log. If I down that particular host the events then appear in one of the other hosts events. I noted that if I browse folders for a VM that is running on the host that is currently proxying the errors do not appear and they directory loads instantly.

Is this normal behavior or have I got something not set correctly?

Everything else seems to run fine and there are no other errors other than these when I browse the datastore. It does not stop me from browsing the datastore it just takes a long time to load directory.

Thanks,

Steve.

I try to automate the installation of the vSphere replication appliance,

This appliance needs to bind with the "vCenter Extension vService".

Wit the UI this works as expected, but is this registration also possible within the deployment with powercli?

6.0 to 6.7 Missing Dependency VIBs error - how to see if in use?

Good Afternoon,

I am trying to update my R730 from esxi 6.0 to esxi 6.7, but when doing so there seems to be some remaining esxi 5.x VIBs stopping me from doing so.

After looking at other posts on here and elsewhere, this should be fixable by removing the incompatible VIBs and updating. However, I have a question on how do I know if I am using said VIB or not. A few of them I figured out, but wasn't sure on the rest of them. Here are, almost all (can't get them all right now), the ones causing issues.

Horizon client with touch screen input

Hello,

Our customer is using HP ThinClients with ThinPro7 and resistive touch screen displays, that setup proved it reliability our customer factory.

They have 3 remote apps and their employees need to change between than thought the day, the problem is that they need to double click the remote app to open it and employees are saying that its is difficult.

O couldn't find any way to increase the delay to recognize a double-click in this OS, so my question is, there is a way to change the behavior of Horizon Client to open the remote app with a single click ?

Another question is, there is any way to increase the menu bar size? (without changing the OS resolution).

Any idea it's welcome, I out of ideas...

Device Updates for iOS

Console version is 20.01.07 on-prem.

Has anyone had luck using WS1 to actually force an iPhone or iPad to install an iOS update? We are testing this using the Device Updates page as well as Device Details -> Updates. There is no issue downloading but when the install command is sent the device throws an error, Unable to install update - An error occurred installing iOS. I'm trying to update my iPhone 8+ from 3.4 to 3.4.1. The device is on WiFi, fully charged, and connected to power.

Thanks

NMP: nmp_ResetDeviceLogThrottling in vmkernel log

$

Hello all....  After updating to the latest 5.5 patches we started seeing some messages repeating at different times (no time pattern) in the vmkernel log on all of our hosts.  The message is:

cpu45:33681)NMP: nmp_ResetDeviceLogThrottling:3311: Error status H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Sense Data: 0x5 0x20 0x0 from dev "mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0" occurred 2 times(of 0 commands)

These messages repeat all day every day.  We boot from a supported SD card and the message indicates the USB device is to blame.  I opened a ticket with VMware, they stated that the messages are benign and nothing to worry about and are related to an updated SCSI driver in the patches we applied.  Basically the message is indicating that vmware is sending sense data to the USB controller which it does not understand and is sending back an illegal request.  Their suggestion was to reach out to HP for a firmware update. (we are at the latest FW on all hosts and I have tried backing down the FW to see if that would help) I have done that however I'm in the midst of a pissing match between VMware and HP both blaming each other for the fix so I'm turning to the community for help.

We have a mix of HPE DL380G8 & G9, and a spattering of ML350s at remote offices.  All of the updated servers are logging this message.

While I appreciate that the messages are benign they are causing noise in the logs and I'd like to figure out a way to 1) fix the issue (ideally) or 2) suppress the messages and 3) validate that the messages are indeed benign.

Are others seeing these same messages in their logs?  Given we have seen this on multiple hosts across multiple generations of HPE servers I'm inclined to believe others are seeing this as well?

To add to it, we recently purchased several DL360 Gen10 servers running 6.5.  All of those servers boot from SD card as well and log a similar message:

cpu40:65665)NMP: nmp_resetDeviceLogThrottling:3348 last error status from device "evi.00e04c20202020" repeated 2 times

cpu43:65665_NMP: nmp_ThrottleLogForDevice:3647 Cmd 0x9e (0x439d423a9200, 0) to dev "evi.00e04c20202020" on path "vmhba32"C0:T0:Lo" Failed: H0x7 D0x0 P:0X0

Thanks in advance for any advice on resolving this.

USB Bug - Devices Failing to Load

$

I am seeing a new and serious issue with VMWare Workstation and USB. This may have only occurred with the latest update, as I did not notice this problem until now.

When a new USB device is connected while a virtual machine is running, the device driver fails to successfully load. For instance, my headphones report a driver error of: "There are no compatible drivers for this device." This does NOT occur when a virtual machine is not running.

This also appears to affect other types of devices. I tried to move my keyboard and mouse to different USB ports and then those drivers no longer worked and I could no longer control my host machine at all.

I was not trying to connect these devices to the virtual machine and even have tried switching to automatically assigning devices to the host and still have the issue.

Here are the environment's details:

VMWare Workstation Player v 15.5.6 build-16341506

Windows 10 v 10.0.19041 Build 19041

Hopefully, this bug report helps.

Thank you,

Justin

vRealize Automation 8.1 - Issue specifying network to connect vNIC

Hey folks,

I am facing an issue where i cannot specify to which network connect the newly deployed VM. I tried the next:

  • Using hard constraint tag.
  • Specify the network to connect using a tag.

I tried multiple combination of those tags on the Network object and also on the Machine object but always it is selecting one default network. I already checked that the network does not have the "Default Zone Network" check.

Any clues?

Using older clients with Horizon 8

$

With the release of Horizon 2006 we are obviously looking at upgrading from our 7.12 environment. Currently checking all the pre-requisites prior to upgrade (note! you need at least a 2012 domain functional level for Horizon 2006!), I've been playing with the product interoperability matrix, and have noticed that (if this is correct) none of the previous client releases are supported with Horizon 2006. Is this really the case?  Do we have to upgrade all of the clients before we can roll this out?

We do have some older thin clients which only have the 4.7 client on and these work fine with 7.12 (albeit with some features not available), will these continue to work?

Cheers
